Residential Fuel Storage Tanks
Residential fuel storage tanks are typically smaller home heating oil tanks. In many cases, they are no longer in use because a furnace has been converted to natural gas or propane gas. Tanks may either be buried underground, located in a crawl space, placed outside above ground or in basements taking up storage space. Typical home heating tanks range from 275 gallons to 1000 gallons. Those found in basements are usually 275-gallon capacity tanks.

Regulatory Issues
Home heating oil tanks are not regulated in the same manner as underground storage tanks at gas stations or commercial establishments. However, these tanks are still regulated by the State Fire Marshals office in Ohio and the Department of Environmental Quality in Michigan. Many tanks have not been in use for years and can develop leaks. If the tank was not completely empty when it was taken out of service, the liability and clean up costs can be substantial. When a home is for sale, fuel storage tanks can become an issue. The new buyer or lending institution does not want to inherit a potential environmental problem.
